The last nine months have been a time which has been like no other for Lions Peak and all the world. The good news for us is that we are still in business thanks to you and having produced a diverse portfolio of red and wine wines to share with all our wonderful Family of Friends! I have asked myself many times if I am living in a dream state, and when I wake up this pandemic will have been just a dream. However, the reality of life is that this is real, and life has changed as we have known it at this time for all of us.
By the first of March, Lions Peak had just finished processing our Spring/ Summer wine club when all the state of California was notified to shelter in place. Initially it was unclear what exactly shelter in place happened to be. I thought that I might be a little slow to understand this new terminology. I found out very quickly what exactly “Shelter in place” is, and Lions Peak’s tasting room was to remain closed for tastings until it was safe. Basically, LP’s business and my personal life changed in a blink of an eye. Our Lions Peak’s business retreated to full operations at our home office at the vineyard and literally we sheltered in place being involved in conducting a Lions Peak from our cell phone and internet and social media connections.
During this time Lions Peak was been involved in our daily operations. Our vineyard and winery are considered an essential service and the production of our wines that were scheduled for bottling in March and April were bottled. Our team so grateful that Lions Peak was permitted to produce the wines which were ready for bottling. We already had the wine in the tank and had completed our final blends at this time. Therefore, Lions Peak bottled nine new stellar white wines and seven reds.
Our good news happened to be that you were there for us, and we shipped you case after case of our new wines. The facts are that Lions Peak would not be here today without you. Your orders have been our online tasting room and talking with you has been a great joy for me to connect with you personally. I have worn so many hats over the years and have lost the direct contact that I had with each of you. These days you have a direct number to me personally for questions that you have on Lions Peak Wines, and I have loved connecting with you personally and sharing your life stories.
You are truly part of my family and my gratitude for your loving kindness is deeply appreciated. I have spoken personally to many club members and am pleased to know that you are doing well. To those that have been less fortunate, you are in our prayers.
For a brief period, our tasting room was permitted to have indoor tasting with social distancing. Now Lions Peak if functioning based on a new business model outdoors. The City of Solvang, ABC, the Health Department, and the State of California have approved outdoor wine tasting, flights, BTG, and bottle sales in Solvang. Our operations in Solvang are now Friday through Sunday and at the Winery- we recommend that you contact us regarding our Tuesday through Thursday schedule at 805.550.4900 or 805.423.1134 due to seasonal availability.
Lions Peak is once again operating the tasting room with outdoor seating. We have had great response for having the wine tasting outside and the city has extended this tasting area for another year. In addition to wine flights, we are offering wine by the glass and bottle sales that may be paired with cheese platters, chocolates, or sandwiches.
Our team was able to plant our new varietals during the first week of August when the temperatures were cool and ideal for planting. By mid-August the heat has once again spiked up with temperatures exceeding the 90’s and numerous days had temperature reaching 107 plus. The excessive heat, the black outs, and unpresented fires in Central and Northern California have proven to be very challenging for Lions Peak. We have been fortunate that the fires are 90 miles North of the Estate vineyard; however, the air quality has been extremely poor on many days. Our vines and current crop have not been affected.
Our 2020 harvest was in September this year. It was one of our earliest. Block four produced our first crop of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. We knew that our yields would be at a minimum since we had removed 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The entire crop was hand harvested and is now in the barrel aging.
The Peak’s 2017 Bordeaux Reserve, Lionnesse, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot line up were bottled this Spring along with our three 2018 Zinfandels. Lions Peak brought back many of your favorite white wines and new white varietals and blends. We welcome you to read about all the new wines on our web site.
Blessings to you and your family and friends.
